The Class And The Year That Changed The World

If you graduated as a member of the class, this milestone, which led to great change in your life, occurred during the year that changed the world. There were fun moments: The Doors appeared on “The Ed Sullivan Show,” hippies hit Broadway in “Hair,” and “Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In” introduced us to Goldie Hawn and chicken jokes.

The Summer of Love in San Francisco, however, was also the Long Hot Summer in Oakland, Detroit and inner cities everywhere, as the Black Panther movement led to escalating clashes with police. Tens of thousands of protesters marched on the Pentagon, demanding an end to the war that, instead, became ever bloodier with the Battle of Khe Sahn and the Tet Offensive. Lyndon Johnson announced that he would not run for re-election as a result of the deep divisions in American society. As you graduated, you went out into a world shocked and frightened by the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy.

Your senior year, however, wasn’t just about these world-shattering events. High school was also about hanging out with your classmates, cheering on your school’s team, falling in love and forming friendships that you thought would last forever.
