Catch Up With The Class
Senior year of high school involved both “Dancing in the Streets” and riots in the streets. The Berkeley Free Speech Movement began that fall; in November, LBJ was reelected over Barry Goldwater and the bombing in Vietnam began to escalate. During the winter, Malcolm X was assassinated, and by spring, all eyes were on the bloody events in Selma, Alabama. In March, the first official American troops were sent to Vietnam, sparking widespread public protest, including teach-ins, demonstrations and draft-card burning, especially in Berkeley and Washington D.C.
